This weekend my first solo show (eek!) opens in Warrington at Pyramid & Parr Hall (in the gallery at Pyramid). This year has been incredibly busy; at the end of 2014 I received some funding from Arts Council England to support a project that I was working on with Culture Warrington and Warrington Borough Council for the First World War centenary. This has pretty much been my life since January - workshops, lots of drawings, a vinyl installation, live art and now the final stage - the exhibition.

Since May I've been working on a new piece of animation for the exhibition - I wanted to produce something that celebrated Warrington in the First World War; I wanted to tell a story without focusing on a particular person or event - something that encapsulated everything that I've found out about the town during the war period. Surprisingly this came out quite easily - I wasn't too rigid with the storytelling. There were certain elements that I wanted to include - snippets from the lives of residents and things that were important to the town and from that a narrative naturally developed. I wanted to create a piece of work that the town would relate to and feel proud of but that would also inspire them to ask questions about their own families during that time.

As well as making a piece of work about and for my home town this was an opportunity for me to develop as an artist. Since graduating 5 years ago (!) animation is the one area of my work that has really been neglected. Time constraints and lack of resources have been the main reason for this and I've really missed making moving image work. My past forays into animation involved stop-motion, paper cut outs, paper mache models and some home-made looking (but brilliant) results. When I included an animation in my project proposal I didn't really consider how I was going to approach it - I just knew that I wanted to do it. I had an idea in my head of the overall look that I was aiming for and I had to just work out what to do from there. It's been a lot of hard work and I've learnt more than I would have thought possible in such a short space of time but it's finished and I'm so proud of it.

The animation will be on display at Pyramid alongside a selection of preliminary drawings from an earlier stage of the project. The exhibition opens on Saturday 18 July running until 29 August (check with the venue for opening times).
The next process covered by the course was painterly (or mono) screen printing. This part of the course was taught by Jenni Nuttall (have a look at her work here: Jenni). This process involves using a blank screen - the ink is painted directly onto the screen and the colours are built up in layers. We weren't aiming for the pieces to actually look like anything so marks were experimental rather than carefully considered - working in this way felt quite liberating (and for me a little bit scary at the same time) as we could just mess around and see how things looked without worrying too much about themes or image. I sometimes find colour a little bit intimidating - especially during printing as it's hard to know how things will look or work without actually doing a print and screenprinting in particular can make colours look really flat. I picked a bright blue and deep yellow ochre as I wanted colours that evoked the sea/coast (although they haven't ended up doing that very much..).

The 'ink' is actually acrylic paint which is loosened up with a screen print medium - with this process it was possible to paint blobs, marks and lines onto the screen with the ink and then flood the screen with medium. Doing this meant that only the marks were transferred on to the paper (the medium helped to push them through the screen). On a couple of the prints I painted the clear medium on to the screen and then flooded with a colour ink which left white gaps which I really loved (see the first, fourth and fifth images).

I'm really happy with the images that I produced however I'm not sure what to do with them - I don't want to work into them further as there's a possibility that I could ruin them but they don't really feel like my work as they're so abstract.

After collagraphs we moved onto relief printing with lino. I was looking forward to working with lino as the last time I had the chance to use it (during my GCSEs) I really enjoyed the process and since then I've seen a lot of amazing lino work by other artists that made me want to give it another go.

I was still using my travel snaps as source material for my print work at this point in the course and I chose a coastal scene (I used it earlier for mono printing as well) as I thought the patterns and textures of the waves/cliffs/grass etc. would translate well onto a lino plate. We were doing a multi coloured print using one plate so it took a while to work out the order of the layers - I don't think I'd be able to explain it again but you start with a plain rectangle of colour and gradually cut into the lino to add each additional colour.

I started with the green as my plain rectangular base colour, then printed the light blue and then the navy on top - I did intend to print a fourth colour to add more definition to the sky but I ran out of time. The colours don't really work for me, in particular the green (I prefer the third image below with the white background). I really should have printed a lot of different background colours and tried out a few combinations but printing a clean rectangle was actually really difficult and I think I felt a bit discouraged after making mistakes with the green.

The cutting and gouging process was difficult (I remember it being tricky in school) as the lino can be quite stubborn and it's easy to cut away more than you intend to. I did enjoy working with the tools and forming the lines and marks in a more hands-on way but I'm not happy with the results that I got from my plate - I don't think the process suits my work as it's clunky and stylised. It's frustrating as I do love lino prints but this technique just isn't for me.

The third print process that we learnt on the course was collagraph; a process where the plate is made out of mountboard. You can either cut into the board or add raised textures to it (or you can do both) and once the design is complete you apply a few thin layers of varnish to make it more durable.

At this point in the course I didn't have a subject or theme to focus on so I was still relying on my collection of travel photos for source material. The image that I chose was of a block flats in Berlin; in front of them (the white space at the side of the print) was quite a grand building/structure with Roman style columns and statues.

The process of making the plate was tough on my fingers - I was cutting into the board with a craft knife and it took about 3-4 hours in total. To achieve the thicker lines and blocky shapes I had to carefully slice around the shape and gently scrape away layers of the card fibres within. I was a little bit impatient with the varnishing and applied a bit too much on my final coat so had to blot it through the press - the results of this are pictured below the prints. I wasn't really impressed with my final prints; the inking process was the same one used for drypoint and I struggled with the texture of this plate. The varnish didn't have the same smooth finish as the metal plates so wiping the ink back was a lot harder. I think the subject matter didn't really lend itself to this process either so if I were to do it again I'd definitely choose a different image.

In the second and third week of the course we focused on drypoint - an intaglio print process which involves scratching a design into a thin metal sheet, inking up the sheet and putting the plate and the paper through a press. As I use mark making a lot in my drawings I really enjoyed this process - there were a variety of tools that we could use to scratch into the metal including an electric Dremel engraver and working into the plate was an interesting process. I enjoyed drawing in a way that was more free; the surface of the metal jarred against the tools making the process less controlled and the marks and lines unpredictable.

As drypoint is an intaglio process you have to cover the plate in ink and then wipe away - the ink is held in the burrs that stick up on either side of the lines and marks that have been scratched into the metal. I found the inking and wiping process difficult - it's very messy and quite labour intensive plus there are certain techniques to wiping which I still really struggle with. I think my first print was helped by a bit of beginners luck as the lighter areas of ink on the rock have given the image a bit more texture and definition but they definitely weren't intentional!

As shown below I used my plates to make 2-3 prints each - the plates can't really be used much more than this as the burrs begin to flatten from going through the press and don't hold as much ink so the prints are softer and a bit blurry. As with mono print this is a process that I'd like to explore further as I think it works well with my style of drawing.

The first session of the course started with mono printing, a process where a very thin layer of ink is rolled out, the paper is laid face down on to the ink and another sheet of paper is laid on top. The drawing/mark making is done on the second piece of paper, the pressure of the pencil or pen through the layers of paper picks up the ink creating a reverse image with soft lines. The process of laying the paper on top of a large area of ink means that other marks are picked up and you have to be careful not to lean on the paper when you're drawing!

For my mono prints I used photos from various walks and trips over the past few years. I wanted to capture some of the textures of the scenery using dashes, dots and cross hatching with the basic shapes built up in line. My favourite is the coastal image (photos 8 and 9) with the green lines for the sea. The images are just on newsprint so they're quite fragile and have already begun to discolour but this simple print method is something that I want to explore further with other papers and subjects.
The course is just under a year long (I've got another 3-4 weeks left on it) and offers the opportunity to try a variety of traditional print processes. Over the next few days and weeks I'm going to be posting some photos of the work that I've produced and my thoughts about each of the processes.

I decided to enrol on the course as I wanted to explore some new ways of working after being confined to working with pen, pencil, watercolours and my Mac for 3 years or so. I wanted to learn some processes that were a bit more hands-on and that would make me think about how I want to develop my work. The course has been challenging at times as the processes can be tricky and we've been learning a new method every couple of weeks so it's been fast paced! The experience has been a positive one though, I've learnt a lot and there are so many areas of print that I want to try further and now I have the basic skills to start exploring.Emma Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07469878291271374427noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5701617744822596880.post-84468853811242283462013-10-17T06:03:00.002-07:002013-10-17T06:10:13.600-07:00New Website..Finally after months of planning and designing I have finally changed and updated my website! It's got a much better layout and it can even be viewed on phones (this has never been the case before!) have a look here!
Playing around with some cat paintings from late last year, the originals were sold off as card but I still have digital files. I think it makes a nice repeat pattern.Emma Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07469878291271374427noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5701617744822596880.post-80927024179351585802013-09-25T02:57:00.000-07:002013-09-25T02:57:22.596-07:00ExhibitionsDuring October my work will be featured in two exhibitions in the North West. The first is taking place at the Craft and Design centre in Manchester's Northern Quarter. As part of Creative Tourist's 'Manchester Weekender' there will be an extension of the Craft and Design centre's current exhibition 'Forming Words' and I will be creating a new piece of work for it.

The new part of the exhibition will be open from 10th -13th October and I will be creating the letter 'A'. I'm currently working on the design (which is going to remain a secret) so head to the Craft and Design Centre over that weekend to see it.

The second exhibition is part of Warrington Contemporary Arts Festival taking place at The Gallery at Bank Quay House and Warrington Museum and Art Gallery. I submitted two existing pieces of work (two of my Whitby original painting/drawings) and they'll be on display from 18th October to 22nd November. I'm originally from Warrington so it's exciting to have the opportunity to showcase some of my work on home turf. There are some incredible artists involved in the festival this year so I'm really looking forward to the launch.

I just wanted to post about a project that I'm doing in a few weeks with the Turnpike Gallery in Leigh. I'll be running two drawing classes during half term; the Junior Drawing School which will be for children aged 8-11 and the Drawing School for Young People for 11-16 year olds.

I'm really excited about the classes as I've got some really fun drawing based activities planned for the groups; I'll be taking the term drawing really loosely and showing the children some more experimental ways to make imagery and hopefully giving them plenty of useful ideas to take home with them.

The classes are £6 for the Junior Drawing School and £10 for the Drawing School for Young People - both prices include two sessions, one with me and one with another local artist Jenna Parton. The classes take place on the 12th and 13th February and there are still places available.

I'll be sharing a table with Caitlin Howard and we'll both be selling various pieces of our work and other wonderful potential gifts. I've got cards, postcards, bags, tea towels, prints and badges for sale all adorned with my illustration work. The event is on Saturday and Sunday (though Caitlin and I will only be there on Saturday) from 10 til 5 so come down and say hello!
The issue (issue 14) was released in May however I haven't had the chance to see the work printed...until now! I just found this charming little video flip through of the magazine made by Worn and spotted my piece! It's about 30 seconds in, the illustration of the glasses on the right is mine, unfortunately you can't see the amound of detail that I put in to the lenses through the video but that is a great excuse to buy a copy of the magazine!
The sketches were a nice chance to play around with mark making and try and capture some of the shapes of the hills and cliffs.
Last week I stayed in St Davids for a week at Whitesands Bay. I’ve never been to Pembrokeshire before so I had no idea what to expect but everywhere was beautiful, quiet and sleepy it was lovely! While I was there I visited a couple of exhibitions as the area has a strong traditional fine art scene. I went to a small exhibition of work by Graham Sutherland a British artist who worked from the 1930s to the 1970s. His work was fantastic; my particular favourites being the earlier work from his time in Pembrokeshire and his work as a war artist. He used so many interesting marks and shapes turning landscapes and buildings into very abstract forms. The colours were all murky browns, greens, reds, yellows and greys perfectly capturing the tones of the hills, stones and beaches.

Some of my favourites:

How Sweet I Roamed (1936)

I also visited a couple of small independent galleries in Porthgain; all of the work (almost all I think) was inspired by or based on the local surroundings and there were some really amazing pieces - inky landscapes and amazing rich coloured skies. My absolute favourites though were the linocut prints by Bernard Green the subtle colours and faded tones were beautiful and the level of detail was incredible. The other gallery contained work by Alun Davies, again mostly scenes from the local area but some really lovely loose paintings of landscapes. Plus paintings of his giant dogs (one came into the gallery and it looked exactly like a polar bear!) which were very sweet.

I've also been busy working on some really exciting projects which I'm going to showcase online as soon as possible so lookout for those! In the meantime have a peep at the Inc. I'm just a very forgetful person and my blog has suffered because of this! Anyway I've been busy working away with various projects, some of which are still ongoing. I can't really post any pictures unfortunately because some pieces haven't been published yet but there should be a couple of things coming out this month and I will blog them right away!

For now though take a look at the website Shirtload (click here!) where some of my drawings are currently on sale in the form of t shirts. You can choose the colour of the t shirt as well which I think is fantastic! I'll be adding more designs to the website over the next few months as I gather my thoughts and create some new drawings. At the moment the foxes (from Tee Twelve) have been rejigged and are up there, plus some new animal merges (farm animals), feathers, arrowheads...all sorts. My personal favourite is the Staffordshire Dog Figurine head, inspired by my love for the pair that my Nana owned when she was still alive. Have a peep at the website and keep checking back for more designs.

Also if you have a chance then take a peek at the interview that I did with Business Boom, a Bolton based website that helps to promote creative businesses and freelancers with features and interviews. Here's a link to the site: Business BoomEmma Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07469878291271374427noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5701617744822596880.post-72545679586418154292012-02-16T05:19:00.001-08:002012-02-16T05:26:13.949-08:00International Drawing ProjectToday is the launch of the International Drawing Project, an exhibition celebrating and demonstrating the importance and diversity of drawing, for a better explanation of the project and the exhibition follow the link below!

Anyway I have a few pieces of work featured in the show, I'm screening 2 of my animations and some of my Crufts inspired pieces will be on display, including some new dogs! The event sounds completely different to any other exhibitions that I've been to or been involved in so I'm excited to see how the evening unfolds.

I'll be blogging some time next week about my experiences hopefully with some images. Here's the link to the info about the project and the details about tonight: International Drawing ProjectEmma Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07469878291271374427noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5701617744822596880.post-67298845598419084572012-02-09T13:57:00.000-08:002012-02-09T14:04:08.077-08:00DerbyshireOver the Christmas period I went away with my parents, we stayed in a really lovely cottage in a quaint little village called Lytton (I think, bad memory!). During this time we went on a few walks and I took my camera with me on one of these walks. This was actually a bit of a mistake as it was really windy and at one point the lenscap blew out of my hand. Anyway I took some photos of the hills and rocks and over the past few weeks, when I've had a spare moment I've started to paint/draw some of these scenes. I just really wanted to use some colour and do something creative, I feel like I've been so busy recently I haven't had time to enjoy drawing and painting. Anyway here's a couple of them and one that I photocopied and worked into more.

Emma Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07469878291271374427noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5701617744822596880.post-23816368403478989722012-01-24T01:03:00.001-08:002012-01-24T01:14:40.475-08:00Postcard SwapYesterday I received a collection of postcards by Carol Chien as part of the Postcards From Europe project. I was pleasently surprised when I opened the package as I was only expecting one card and Carol had produced 5 plus there was one sent by the exhibition as well. The cards are lovely and it was a great way for me to be introduced to Carol's work. I particularly like the garden postcard and that will be making it's way onto my wall. It's exciting to think that somewhere someone will be opening up an envelope and finding my postcard, I hope they enjoy it!

Here are some photos of the contents of the package and a link to Carol's website:

Carol's Website

Emma Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07469878291271374427noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5701617744822596880.post-72752960801807673292012-01-23T04:10:00.000-08:002012-01-23T04:27:37.626-08:00Life DrawingDuring September and October last year I attended a life drawing class in Warrington. I'd never actually done any life drawing before, somehow the chance never came up despite the fact that I studied art at GCSE, A Level and Foundation. I thought it would be a good way to practice and improve my drawing skills; drawing the human form is something that I feel quite intimidated by and this fear is something that I need to conquer and move past in order to further my work.

The class was quite hard but it was really good to be back in an environment of shared learning. After being away from education for a year it felt quite strange to be part of a lesson and to work alongside other people but it was very relaxed and I think I benefitted from being able to look at the work of the other members of the class and see how they approached the task. I went to about 5 classes, all of them started with quick poses and then progressed to 20 minute and half an hour poses. I think I improved slightly with proportion but I still found it quite hard to let go and work in a looser more expressive style. I've become accustomed to working in small spaces and with tiny detail and I think it's important to be able to work quickly and loosely as well. Below are some (very quick) snaps of the drawings.

<img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; The exhibition was organised by Collate Presents a curatorial team made up of two creatives from Brighton; Gem a furniture designer/maker and features editor and Carly a sculptor and artist. The exhibition brief was to send in some work that hadn't really had much exposure so I chose 2 pages from my Grow Your Own sketchbook from 2009. I'm really excited that the work is on show and hopefully it will be well received. The exhibition contains the work of 83 2d artists and had approxiamately 200 pieces in it, all of which are for sale. Unfortunately I couldn't make it to the private view (and won't be able to see the exhibition at all in fact!) due to travel/time issues but I was able to enjoy a video of the private view (see link below) and even spotted a piece of my work! If you're in Brighton any time in the next few days it's on until the 17th January at Artist Residence in Regency Square.

To see the here and read a bit more about Collate Presents click below!
http://www.collatepresents.com/mull-it-over-jan-12.htmlEmma Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07469878291271374427noreply@blogger.com0
